Garland Keeps Work Flowing For Leading Glass Packaging Manufacturer

Since most roof leaks begin slowly, it can be tempting to postpone repair or replacement out of concern that the solution will be even more disruptive than the problem. For that reason, the roof leaks at Saint-Gobain's glass container manufacturing facility in Madera, CA, were already severe when Garland representative, Richard Jones, was asked to inspect them. Contractor, Dan Mather of Fresno Roofing, who would eventually handle the necessary re-roofing project, describes the condition of the roof like this: "The mechanically attached EPDM with adhesive seams was leaking badly, with splits in the angles, pipe boots, and membrane. The leaks were over a production area where they make glass containers for wine, and they were disrupting the workflow below. When Garland invited us to bid on the project, our challenge was to put on a new roof without further interruption to the manufacturing work."

Installation - without interruption

As a leading manufacturer of glass packaging for the food and beverage industry, Saint-Gobain Containers (part of the Saint-Gobain Group) has 16 plants and two service centers in North America, and is headquartered in Muncie, IN. They were looking for a watertight solution that could be installed without disturbing their operations.

A comprehensive restoration process

Garland requested a thermographic scan to identify the locations where water had already penetrated the insulation. The contractor then replaced those portions of insulation and membrane that were wet, sealing all splits in the membrane with new EPDM. The entire roof was pressure washed with a compatible cleaning solution. Then all deteriorated areas were reinforced with polyester/fiberglass fabric, prior to applying Garland's White•Knight multipurpose urethane and restoration waterproofing system.

"A nice clean white roof"

According to Jones, the Title 24-compliant, watertight roofing assembly is protected under Garland's restoration warranty. Mather concludes, "It's a quality coating and it worked well for us. We took an ugly old black roof and turned it into a nice clean white roof."
